Preventive Visits Cover Issues Like Sleep Apnea

Oral sleep appliances and snore guards are life savers for many. What is the difference? How do I know if I or my loved ones need either?

Are you tired? Do you fall asleep anytime your sit down for more than a minute or two? Do you snore or gasp for air at night? There is one way to know if you are suffering breathing difficulties when you sleep. Have a professional sleep study. There are markers such as tooth wear, snoring, or gasping for air while asleep but the most accurate diagnosis of sleep apnea is through a sleep study.

Proper Sleep Enhances Your Mood and Smile

Your doctor can prescribe a sleep study. Once you have a diagnosis you will rest easy. If you do have sleep apnea you may chose to use a C-PAP machine. If you have mild sleep apnea or are non-compliant with your C-PAP you may be a candidate for an oral sleep appliance. This is an oral device that repositions the jaw and opens the airway.

Snoring has ended relationships. Many people have found relief with a snore guard. It is different but like an oral sleep appliance.

Please ask you dentist for more information and wake up bright and fresh.

What you Need to Know about Snore Guards and Sleep Apnea

Do you snore? Does your partner or family member snore?  Often times, people become irritated and bothered when someone’s snoring wakes them up but did you know there may be an underlining medical disorder?

Sleep apnea is a serious condition that should not be ignored. When someone has sleep apnea, they stop breathing for short periods throughout the night.

Did you know your dentist can provide relief?

Sleep apnea patients may opt for a continuous positive airway pressure device (CPAP) machine that is worn at night. There is another solution that your dentist can treat you with — of you not only snore but are not getting enough oxygen you can be fitted for an oral appliance that opens the airway. Oral appliances and snore guards are similar to night guards but reposition your tongue and lower jaw. This realignment clears your obstructed airway and allows you to breath regularly while you sleep.

You owe it to yourself and your family to get a better nights sleep — sleep is critical to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Nighttime Health Tip: Sleep Apnea Could Be Affecting Your Day!

Sleep apnea is a medical disorder which causes your breathing to stop for a few seconds several times during the night. Central sleep apnea (CSA) is caused when the breathing muscles do not receive necessary information from the brain, and should be treated by your doctor. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which is much more common, occurs when soft tissues in the mouth over relax and block proper airflow while lying down. This is an area where Frankel Dentistry can help your overall health.

The most common nighttime symptom of OSA sleep apnea is loud and chronic snoring. Other symptoms that occur during your sleeping hours include choking or gasping for air, longer than normal pauses between breaths, and restlessness.

Daytime symptoms that may indicate sleep apnea include:

  • Waking in the morning with a headache, dry mouth, or sore throat
  • Excessive sleepiness during the day
  • Mood changes including depression or anger
  • Memory problems
  • Difficulty concentrating

If you notice any of these symptoms, you should talk to your doctor right away. If you are diagnosed with OSA, Frankel Dentistry can work with you to find the most effective sleep apnea treatment for you.

Sleep Apnea Risk Factors

Sleep apnea could be linked to a family history of the disorder or a genetic factor such as narrow airways. Allergies or chronic congestion can also be culprits. The leading risk factors for OSA include:

  • Being over your ideal weight
  • A sedentary lifestyle
  • Excessive use of alcohol
  • Narcotic or excessive sleep aid use
  • Use of tobacco products
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Diabetes

Sleep apnea is more common in men than in women, and the risks increase with age. However, anyone can suffer from sleep apnea. If you are experiencing symptoms, you should discuss them with a doctor as soon as possible, because if left untreated, the consequences of sleep apnea can be severe: significant cognitive disruptions, as well as increasing your risk for hypertension, heart disease, and other serious medical conditions could occur. Thanks Dr. Frankel!

Thanks Dr. Frankel!

I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea in 2012 by the UTMC sleep clinic and a CPAP machine was recommended for the treatment of my severe condition.

I struggled to find a Medical supply company that was not relocating or closing their doors every several months and even worse, trying to find a suitable breathing apparatus that I did not want to tear off in the middle of the night. That went on for 1 ½ years and then I simply stopped using CPAP because it kept waking me and disrupting my sleep. For over the past year I have been mot using any sleeping device other that trying “Breathe Right” strips, which had no effect, and sleeping very poorly. My snoring was so bad that my wife could not sleep in the same room and was affecting her sleep as well and was putting a strain on our marriage.

While visiting my Primary Care Physician, Robert Axonovitz, he advised me to see a dentist specializing in a mouth piece that helps stop snoring.

During the next regular visit to Jon Frankel Dentistry, I spoke with him regarding a mouth piece that he highly recommended and had a huge success from patient reviews and feedback.

Since using the mouth guard treatment my sleep pattern has increased and my snoring has ended from the very first night! I actually enjoy wearing it each night.

My wife and I now sleep together and we wake more rested. I thanked Doctor Frankel and his great staff for saving our marriage.

I whole-heartedly recommend this product and an additional benefit of the mouth guard is that there will no longer be monthly expenses for the machine supplies.

Sleep Apnea (or repeated stopped breathing while asleep) may currently be one of the most under-diagnosed and severe impairments. The consequences are grave. High blood pressure, cardiovascular complications, memory problems, weight gain, impotency and headaches are a few of the sleep apnea related issues. People often are unaware of sleep apnea even though breathing stops hundreds of times a minute a night, many times for over a minute.

Those fortunate enough to be diagnosed have a treatment protocol including a CPAP or BiPap machine. Compliance is a problem. The forced breathing apparatus works but patients simply refuse to use it. Reasons vary but may include the need to sleep on their backs, the mask leaking unless closely bound (leaving facial marks), allergic reactions to mask material, noise disturbing partners sleep, sensation of drowning or claustrophobia when using machine, and/or angst associated the with need to be attached to a machine at night.

There are two main types of sleep apnea, Obstructive occurs when the throat muscles relax, Central occurs when your brain doesn’t send proper signals to the muscles controlling breathing. Complex sleep apnea is a combination of the Obstructive and  Central forms.

Dr. Jon Frankel recently attended a continuing education course in advanced diagnostics and 3 D Cone Beam Radiology. The Cone Beam equipment at Dr. Frankel’s office offers a view of  the airway from several angles. Many patients are totally unaware their airway is constricted or that they may have sleep apnea. The technology at Dr. Frankel’s office allows patients to not only detect but treat sleep apnea.

Dr. Frankel now offers an alternative to traditional CPAP and BiPap treatment. The Moses Oral Appliance is FDA approved. Acceptance is high as the “Moses” simply fits in the mouth over the teeth and dilates the airway allowing unobstructed breathing.  Home sleep studies have confirmed the Moses Oral Appliance efficacy.
