    3. Stay Hydrated:

Dry mouth is a common issue for seniors, often caused by medications. Saliva helps protect your teeth, so stay hydrated and consider using sugar-free lozenges or mouthwashes designed to combat dry mouth.

    4. Maintain Good Oral Hygiene Habits:

Continue to brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristle toothbrush. Don’t forget to floss daily to remove plaque and food particles between your teeth.

    5. Consider Dental Implants:

If you have missing teeth, dental implants are a fantastic solution. They look and function like natural teeth and can significantly improve your smile and chewing ability.

    6. Address Tooth Sensitivity:

Tooth sensitivity can become more pronounced with age. If you experience sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks, speak with your dentist. There are solutions available to alleviate discomfort.

    7. Watch for Oral Cancer:

Oral cancer risk increases with age. Pay attention to any unusual sores, lumps, or changes in your mouth, lips, or throat. Regular dental check-ups include oral cancer screenings for early detection.

    8. Eat a Balanced Diet:

A healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and dairy products is essential for overall health and your smile. Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks that can harm your teeth.

  3. Tooth sensitivity can be a frustrating and uncomfortable dental issue that affects millions of people worldwide. Sharp, sudden pain that accompanies the consumption of hot or cold foods and beverages can put a damper on daily life. While there are various causes behind tooth sensitivity, it’s important to address any underlying problems rather than simply endure the discomfort. Let’s dive deeper into tooth sensitivity and how to help!

Tooth sensitivity can be a result of many factors such as:

Tooth enamel erosion: The protective layer of enamel can wear down over time due to aggressive brushing, acidic foods, or acid reflux. As the enamel thins, the underlying dentin becomes exposed, leading to sensitivity.

Dental cavities: Cavities compromise the integrity of the tooth structure, causing sensitivity when the nerve endings are exposed to stimuli.

Gum recession: Receding gums expose the tooth roots, which lack the protective enamel covering. The roots contain tiny tubules that connect to nerve endings, making them more susceptible to sensitivity.

six tips on how to help sensitive teeth.

Of course we recommend speaking with your dental care provider to find any underlying health concerns but if you can’t get into the office soon enough here are some tips to  help:

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush: Brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush and adopting a gentle brushing technique can prevent further enamel erosion and gum recession.

Use desensitizing toothpaste: Specialized toothpaste for sensitive teeth contains compounds that help block nerve sensations and provide relief. Regular use can help reduce sensitivity over time.

Avoid acidic and sugary foods: Acidic foods and beverages, as well as excessive sugar consumption, can contribute to enamel erosion and tooth decay. Limiting their intake can protect your teeth from further damage.

Wear a mouthguard at night: If tooth sensitivity is caused by teeth grinding or clenching, wearing a mouthguard at night can help minimize the pressure on your teeth and prevent enamel wear.

It’s important to note that these are all temporary fixes, it’s crucial to schedule regular dental visits with our team at Frankel Dentistry to address the underlying causes of tooth sensitivity! A dental professional can identify any dental issues, such as cavities, gum disease, or enamel erosion, and develop a personalized treatment plan. Routine dental cleanings and examinations are essential for maintaining optimal oral health and preventing further complications! We’d be happy to take a look at your smile!

  4. Dental Hygienists are dental healthcare providers! The scope of practice may  vary from state to state. At Frankel Dentistry, our patients tell us we have the  best dental hygienists and we agree.

In Ohio, they perform a wide range of services, such as:

Examining teeth and gums to identify problems, which may include cavities,  gum disease, or oral cancer.

Cleaning teeth and gums. Using specific dental instruments and tools, they  remove plaque, tartar, and stains, which helps prevent tooth decay and gum  disease.

Taking radiographs. Dental hygienists may take x-rays of teeth and jaws to  reveal issues not visible in an oral exam.

Instructing and explaining toothbrushing and flossing, diet, and the use of  fluoride. Oral health education may include diseases of the teeth, gums, and  mouth.

Local anesthesia and nitrous oxide may be administered by dental hygienists  under the supervision of a licensed dentist.

Applying topical fluoride to strengthen and remineralize enamel is another  dental hygienist function.

Dental hygienists are invaluable members of the dental health team. Your  smile will thank you if you see your dental hygienist once every 3 to 6  months.

  5. Teeth seem to be getting whiter and whiter. A beautiful bright smile is attractive. There are several at home teeth whitening products. We asked our dental professionals and patients. These are a few of their favorites.

    Brighter Smiles with Teeth Whitening!

Brighten your smile with teeth whitening!

Both the patients and the dental professionals stressed seeing your dentist first. Dental diseases such as swollen bleeding gums and decay need to be addressed before whitening teeth.

The best option according to those we asked is custom whitening trays. They fit well and therefore the gel is neatly placed around the teeth. Some dental offices offer whitening for life. Once the initial trays are made and tubes of whitening gel purchased patients receive an additional tube of whitening at each dental hygiene visit.

Another favorite was Crest 3D Whitestrips. They are not custom-made but are convenient and easily accessible.

Opalescence Go is offered at many dental practices as a complimentary gift for new patients after they have completed necessary treatment. Once again, it is not a custom fit but comes in different strengths and is designed to be used 10-15 days for maximum results.

Demonstration and steps regarding how to use Opalescence Go whitening.

Colgate Optic Toothpaste and Opalescence Whitening toothpaste come up as preferred whitening toothpastes.

It is important to note that while these products can be effective, it is essential to consult with a dentist before starting any whitening treatment.

  7. Back to school season is finally here! Frankel Dentistry wants to help your little ones start the year with a healthy, happy smile. Taking care of your smile goes beyond just cleaning your teeth and regular dental visits, it’s important to watch what you’re putting into your body!

Here are some healthy back to school snacks to help promote dental health!

    • Apples, Celery, and Carrots! Did you know crunchy fruit and vegetables can help clean your teeth by removing plaque from the enamel? Not only do they clean your teeth but also provide you with vitamins and minerals to support your body.

Some of our favorite classic snacks include apple slices or celery with peanut butter. Carrots and other crunchy vegetables always pair great with hummus.

    • Milk, cheese, and yogurt. Dairy products are a great source of calcium, which helps repair enamel and strengthen bones which support your teeth. Cheese and yogurt are also rich in vitamin D and phosphate which create lower acid levels and reduce the risk of tooth decay.
    • Nuts and seeds! Almonds, peanuts, sunflower seeds and more are a great source of healthy fats, vitamin D, folic acid and not to mention one of the best sources of protein.
    • Thinking about what to drink? Water.

Encourage your little ones to drink more water daily! Water helps hydrate your organs and muscle, balance pH levels in the mouth, and increase saliva production which means less tooth decay and stronger tooth enamel.

  8. How often do you feel oral pain after enjoying a bite of your summer sundae on a nice July night? Or struggle to enjoy a nice hot cup of soup? You could be struggling with tooth sensitivity.

    What is tooth sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity is pain or discomfort as a response to hot and cold stimuli. This can be anything from hot foods to cold air.

    What causes tooth sensitivity?

Let’s look at the anatomy of a tooth. The strong outer layer of a tooth is called enamel. The more enamel is worn down the more sensitive the tooth becomes.

There are many factors which could contribute to tooth sensitivity such as:

    -brushing too hard

    -Acidic foods

    -Teeth grinding

    -Tooth decay

    -Gastrointestinal issues such as GERD

How to care for sensitive teeth?

First and foremost visit a dentist for a full exam. A cleaning and professional exam can help detect any deeper issues which could be causing your sensitivity or any other oral health concerns. Your dentist may recommend fluoride treatments to help protect and rebuild your enamel. They may also recommend alcohol- free mouthwash and a toothpaste specialized for sensitive teeth. Specialized products often have desensitizing ingredients to help block discomfort and limited irritating ingredients.

Maintaining a strong, consistent oral health care routine at home can do wonders for your oral health. Invest in products which can help rebuild and protect enamel. Practice a healthy diet and try limiting acidic foods. Frankel Dentistry wants to help you achieve and maintain optimal oral health care. 9. June is Men’s Health Awareness Month and Frankel Dentistry is spreading awareness and encouraging healthy habits. Did you know over 350,000 men die every year from heart disease? And only 3 out 5 have regular physicals. Believe it or not, your oral health is connected to your health! This is why we always say a Healthy Mouth Promotes a Healthy Body! Oral health is often overlooked but did you know there are currently 3.6 billion individuals struggling with oral diseases?

Father and Son smiling and laughing. Baby is waving. Healthy, bright smile. University of Toledo representative. University of Toledo gear.

Your mouth is typically a good indicator of your overall well-being. Individuals with periodontal disease have the same risk factors as those with heart disease. Diseases such as diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and Alzthemiers can all be connected to oral health. Frankel Dentistry wants to see you live a healthy, happy life with smiles to share for years to come. How can you make sure you’re practicing a healthy lifestyle?

Here are some heart healthy habits to help encourage a healthy lifestyle!

    1. A healthy diet.

Limit your fat and sodium consumption! Highly fat foods are known to increase your risk of heart disease or stroke. This is because fatty foods increase cholesterol which lead to high blood pressure, build up in the blood, clogged arteries, and more.

A heart healthy diet includes whole grains, fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and limit processed foods.

    1. Exercise!

30 minutes a few days a week is all you need! Cardio exercises such as walking, running, cycling, or exercise classes all help strengthen your heart. Find a form of exercise you love and will look forward to!

    1. DENTAL CARE

As you know a healthy mouth promotes a healthy body! Studies have shown bacteria in the mouth creates plaque which can move into the bloodstream and increase your risk for diabetes, stroke, and more. Remember to brush twice a day for at least two minutes, floss regularly, and schedule your recare appointments!

    1. Quality rest.

Quality sleep is essential to your health and well-being. Sleep allows your heart to rest as well as improve blood pressure and heart rate. We recommend a 7-8 hours of quality rest a night.

  10. May is Family Wellness Month AND Mental Health Month.

Your physical health is just as important as your mental health! This month we are sharing healthy habits to encourage a healthier lifestyle for you and your family!

    1. Get outside! A little summer sunshine can go a long way. Chances are you’ve spent the winter tucked away and Vitamin D deprived. Take a family walk or bike ride in the evening, visit a new park or trail, walk the dog daily, and be sure to take in the sunshine and fresh air.
Toledo local organization Miles for Smiles walk. Mom and children walking as a form of exercise.
    1. Try a healthy new recipe. Pick a night to cook a healthy meal with your family. This is a great way to spend quality time together while still being productive. This is also an opportunity to teach children the importance of a balanced diet and trying new foods.
    1. Practice mindfulness. This is an opportunity to help your children understand the importance of mental health. Simply reflect on the day you’ve had or situations which have left your little ones with certain emotions. Help them discover “why” they feel the emotions they do. Also, try a five minute meditation or positive affirmations. Encourage your children to highlight their favorite things about themselves to promote self esteem!
    1. Find a self care routine. Help your loved ones find a way they love to care for themselves, this could be taking time for a skin care routine, workout routine, an oral care routine, or nighttime cooldown routine. This is time for you all to relax yet still be productive towards your health.
Oral care is self care. Three different forms of self care that can help you take care of your mind and body.
Oral care routine, skin care routine, mental care routine.
    1. Practice oral health! A healthy mouth promotes a healthy body. Teaching your kids healthy oral habits at a young age can help ensure a beautiful, life lasting smile. Brush, floss, rinse, visit Dr. Frankel and repeat!
    2. Connect with one another. Good relationships are important for your mental wellbeing. It never hurts to remind your family how much they mean to you and the impact they’ve made on your life.
