  1. Wearing down your smile by grinding your teeth throughout the night? Unbearable migraines as a result from uncontrollable clenching?
Our Maumee office, Frankel and Puhl Dentistry could have a solution for you! Dr. Amber Puhl, DDS is now administering Botox to help treat TMJ and bruxism.

Not sure what TMJ is? Let us break it down for you.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) acts like a sliding hinge, connecting your jawbone to your skull. You have one joint on each side of your jaw. TMJ disorders, a type of temporomandibular disorder or TMD, can cause pain in your jaw joint and in the muscles that control jaw movement. Over 80% of patients suffer from some sort of TMJ disorder.
Woman suffering from jaw pain and aches from TMJ.

    What causes TMJ?

TMJ can be the result of a number of factors. Arthritis, jaw injury, teeth clenching and/or grinding all contribute to TMJ development. During early signs of teeth grinding and clenching we recommend visiting your dentist regarding night guards to protect your enamel and your jaw.

Signs and symptoms of TMJ disorders may include:

    • Pain or tenderness of your jaw
    • Pain in one or both of the temporomandibular joints
    • Aching pain in and around your ear
    • Difficulty chewing or pain while chewing
    • Aching facial pain
    • Locking of the joint, making it difficult to open or close your mouth

    Botox Can Help!

You have undoubtedly heard of Botox injections used to enhance lips, cheeks, or to smooth out wrinkles across the forehead or around the eyes. But you may not be familiar with Botox treatment for TMJ. When the Botox is injected into the temporalis and masseter muscles, it limits muscle function and relieves facial pain, headaches, and swelling associated with TMJ.

Always Better! Frankel and Puhl Dentistry is adding Botox as a treatment option for patients who suffer from TMJ disorders. Continuing to learn and grow to best serve our patients is very important to us. After training and continued education with the American Academy of Facial Esthetics,  our very own Dr. Amber Puhl, DDS will be offering botox treatment!

Struggling with tension headaches and jaw pain from TMJ? Botox could be your answer. Visit us online or call today to schedule an appointment.

  3. The holiday season is full of celebrations! In true Frankel fashion, we can always find a reason to express gratitude and celebrate our wins. This holiday season we are celebrating another year of growth, ownership mindsets, and the opportunity to love the ones we work with! On November 4th, we celebrated with all our Ohio team members at the Renaissance Hotel in Downtown Toledo. With over 200 guests, our holiday gathering transpired into quite the party!  Drs. Frankel and Puhl opened our night highlighting peaks in our year past, acknowledging our employees whose dedication should never go unnoticed and introducing our newest partners Foundation Dental and Firestone Dentistry.

This was an incredible opportunity to get to know our new team members from Akron and Canton. We spent the evening enjoying dinner, drinks, photo booths, gifts, and dancing!  Gratitude always, we gifted our team’s new Frankel Dentistry swag from our favorite Toledo local vendor, JUPMODE as a thank you for their kindness and dedication to their team members. Kurt Nielsen provided not one but two photo booths! He now offers a mobile photo booth with custom photo frames! These are photos we can look back on and remember the beginning days of our journey as an ESOP.

There truly is something special about loving your workplace and loving the ones you work with. We couldn’t be more grateful to serve our NW Ohio community with teams who are so passionate and dedicated to excellent patient care. We can’t thank Dr. Frankel and Dr. Puhl enough for gifting us their company. Grateful to serve with you. Looking forward to another year of growth and Changing Lives a Smile at a Time!

  5. Best Workplace

There are a variety of ways to determine best workplace. Awards and accolades are nice but going to the source is ideal. Asking the doctors, healthcare providers, and staff about Frankel Dentistry reveals why this is absolutely the best place to work in Toledo.

Kenyetta has been with Frankel Dentistry for over 30 years. 28 years ago, she left for a month after being courted away by another company. She was back within weeks.

“There is nothing like Frankel Dentistry. It is gratifying to serve the community and each other. Dentistry as a profession is unique. You help others with how they look and feel. A healthy mouth promotes a healthy body. Frankel Dentistry takes it to another level. We are constantly improving through systems, technology, and an incredibly caring culture. Debbie was a dental hygiene student at Owens Community College. A Frankel Dentistry Dental Hygienist was attending an event where hygiene students offer academic presentations. She invited Deb to visit Frankel Dentistry. Twenty years later Deb is the dental hygiene team leader, practices dental hygiene, and educates patients with complimentary consultations.

“I don’t know how to put in words how Frankel Dentistry has impacted my life. I was a patient. Drs. Sheldon and Jon Frankel impressed me with their passion to change lives a smile at a time through the highest standards of dental care. I sought out a dental hygiene program. Owens Community College has an outstanding program, and I was thrilled to be accepted. It was serendipitous when I met Pamela at the annual table clinics. I have a career I love, working with people I like and respect. I have had opportunities to grow professionally and personally while helping others. Recently, Dr. Frankel gave the practice to the employees. I feel fortunate to work at Frankel Dentistry. It is home.”

     Deb Oliver

A Frankel Dentistry human resources employee made a call to a local business for service. The operator solved an ongoing issue. The interaction left her feeling better. She recognized this as part of the Frankel Dentistry culture and asked him to visit the practice.

“I hated my job. I worked in a call center for years. The employees were dissatisfied. The systems were inefficient. It was exhausting. A Frankel Dentistry team leader needed the services of my company. She was impressed with my customer service and asked me to visit Frankel Dentistry. I had no expectations but was so unhappy I took a leap of faith.

It was a life changing choice. I started in the call center at Frankel Dentistry. I currently am the office integrator which is another name for manager. I am happier, more energetic, feel I truly make a difference in the lives of the doctors, healthcare providers, staff, and patients I work with. My family has noticed I am more available.

Dr. Frankel changed my life and the lives of my wife and children. I know my career helps others with their personal health and well-being. It just doesn’t get better than that.”

  6. September is here! Can you believe how fast the 2022 year has gone by? As we start to enter the fall season, we want to remind you to not only visit the dentist to ensure optimal oral health but to continue to work on your self-improvement. September is Self Improvement month and it’s the perfect time to revisit your personal goals and take steps to be who you aspire to be!

This month, all our Frankel Dentistry team members are sharing their personal goals for the year! #AlwaysBetter! We are excited to get a jump start on positive, healthy habits that will help us create the lives we want to live! Here are just a few to help inspire you!

A member of our finance team, Jerica, just purchased a home and has prioritized remodeling the space into something she adores!

Brilliant and career driven, our new doctor Dr. Dhaliwal, hopes to become implant certified to allow her to change the lives of even more patients!

Smiles in the front hope to start helping smiles in the back! Our front desk extraordinaire, Yasmeen, is taking steps to become a dental assistant and become part of our clinical team!

Happy and Healthy! It seems as though prioritizing and devising a healthcare plan is our most common goal. Dozens of us like Lisa, Megan, Hava, Dr. Frankel, Ashley, Brittany, and more are workin’ on their fitness!

Little actions lead to big actions! Your self improvement goal can be big or small. Alexa wants to keep her car clean, Joellen wants to stop biting her nails, and Kylee wants to drink more water!

With an #AlwaysBetter attitude, our Frankel Dentistry team is excited to work towards bettering ourselves to help better others! Little actions, little words, a little bit of love and encouragement are all things that combine to achieve a greater goal!

What are some of your personal goals for September or even for the rest of the year?

  7. July is filled with dozens of reasons to smile. This month we smile because Frankel Dentistry is welcoming a new doctor. We are overjoyed to present Dr. Erin Waples D.D.S!

    Erin Waples, DDS.

An Ohio native and former Ohio State Buckeye! Dr. Waples was born and raised in the small village of Mogadore in Northeastern Ohio. She grew up loving soccer, track, and the great outdoors, spending dozens of weekends camping and hiking with her family.

She attended the University of Akron where she studied Biomedical Engineering. She knew she wanted a fulfilling, impactful career while still being able to maintain a work life balance. Post graduation she began shadowing different career fields and discovered her passion for dentistry. “There is something so special about working with your hands, touching the lives of patients, and creating long lasting relationships and friendships.”

A young Erin Waples pursued her dental degree at THE Ohio State University. She spent her time in Columbus playing intramural soccer, attending Buckeye games with friends, and serving the community through the Delta Sigma Delta organization.

Dr. Waples is special to us because she is special to someone here! While at THE Ohio State University she met her fiance, fellow Frankel and Puhl dentist, Dr. Westmeyer. Dr. Westmeyer is also an OSU alumni and has been a part of our Maumee team since 2019. These two are avid adventurers! They enjoy camping, hiking, snow sports, and exploring national parks and new destinations! In October 2021 Dr. Westmeyer popped the question and now they patiently plan and await their big day. In the meantime these two are thrilled and grateful to serve the NWO community through their passions.

Frankel Dentistry is thrilled to have Dr. Waples a part our team. We cannot wait to Change Lives a Smile at a Time with her.

  8. May is Family Wellness Month AND Mental Health Month.

Your physical health is just as important as your mental health! This month we are sharing healthy habits to encourage a healthier lifestyle for you and your family!

    1. Get outside! A little summer sunshine can go a long way. Chances are you’ve spent the winter tucked away and Vitamin D deprived. Take a family walk or bike ride in the evening, visit a new park or trail, walk the dog daily, and be sure to take in the sunshine and fresh air.
Toledo local organization Miles for Smiles walk. Mom and children walking as a form of exercise.
    1. Try a healthy new recipe. Pick a night to cook a healthy meal with your family. This is a great way to spend quality time together while still being productive. This is also an opportunity to teach children the importance of a balanced diet and trying new foods.
    1. Practice mindfulness. This is an opportunity to help your children understand the importance of mental health. Simply reflect on the day you’ve had or situations which have left your little ones with certain emotions. Help them discover “why” they feel the emotions they do. Also, try a five minute meditation or positive affirmations. Encourage your children to highlight their favorite things about themselves to promote self esteem!
    1. Find a self care routine. Help your loved ones find a way they love to care for themselves, this could be taking time for a skin care routine, workout routine, an oral care routine, or nighttime cooldown routine. This is time for you all to relax yet still be productive towards your health.
Oral care is self care. Three different forms of self care that can help you take care of your mind and body.
Oral care routine, skin care routine, mental care routine.
    1. Practice oral health! A healthy mouth promotes a healthy body. Teaching your kids healthy oral habits at a young age can help ensure a beautiful, life lasting smile. Brush, floss, rinse, visit Dr. Frankel and repeat!
    2. Connect with one another. Good relationships are important for your mental wellbeing. It never hurts to remind your family how much they mean to you and the impact they’ve made on your life.

  9. Sweet summer sun, smiles, and sangria! On Friday April 29th Frankel Dentistry and Frankel and Puhl Dentistry met in one of their favorite places to celebrate a quarter of growth and ownership mindsets! Majestic Oaks is a locally owned winery who offers delicious, fresh beers, wines, and sangrias! Our teams first visited Majestic Oak last summer and immediately fell in love with the atmosphere, beauty, and sangria flights!

This year Drs. Frankel and Puhl treated us to another beautiful day at the winery to spend time out of office with the ones we love to change lives with. This was a chance to meet the newest doctors to join our practice, and fresh, fun front and clinical employees!

Find a workplace you love! Both the Toledo and Maumee offices are home to dozens of friendships. As we continue to grow and intermix with one another we build even more relationships and friendships through our careers and passion. Changing lives is even more meaningful when you work with people you love. We are grateful to come together and creating lasting memories like these.

As a 100% employee owned practice, taking time to build culture and meet our fellow owners is important to us. We all  work together as a team not only to create positive experiences for patients and serve our community, but to build our practice!

A special thank you to the amazing Toledo local photographer Kurt Nielson for taking the time to come out and capture the friendship behind Changing Lives, Majestic Oak Winery for allowing our practice to take over your beautiful grounds, and Lulu Fare for amazing snacks and sweets.

Always Better. Serve All. Gratitude. Encouragement. Trust. Owner Mindset!

Frankel Dentistry and Frankel and Puhl Dentistry- Majestic Oak 2022

  10. Toledo, Ohio is home of the first 100% employee-owned dental practice in the United States. The doctors, healthcare workers, and staff at Frankel Dentistry are upbeat, fun, and professional. How did these innovative folks decide on careers in dentistry?

Dr. Frankel is a natural. His father was a dentist, his sister and aunt are dental hygienists, an uncle and two cousins are dentists, and his daughter is in dental school at NOVA. If vocation can be inherited, this is a case in point. Dr. Frankel seems born to be a dentist.

    Jon Frankel, DDS

Natalie matriculated in a program to become a sonographer. She knew she wanted to be in the medical field. Her sister works in a dental office. People kept asking her if she was in the dental hygiene program since she had such an amazing smile. She took it as a sign and switched programs. She has been at Frankel Dentistry for 12 years. People still mention her beautiful smile!

Angie had an exciting career in a law office. She left to raise six children. Once the children were off to school she wanted to find another gratifying career. Her neighbor was a dental sales representative. Angie’s future was just next door. He suggested she apply at Frankel Dentistry. Angie started at the front desk six years ago. Currently she is the integrator at the Maumee location. According to Angie, “It has been the best thing ever. I would never work anywhere else.”

    100% Happy / 100% Employee-Owned

Lisa knew her office in an academic setting was closing. She thrives when helping others. She bumped into an acquaintance and mentioned her situation. The conversation led to Frankel Dentistry. That was eight years ago. Lisa shares that she is doing what she loves with people she loves!

As a child, Brittney loved going to the dentist. She imagined herself as a dentist. Today, the doctors, healthcare workers and staff at Frankel Dentistry are grateful to have her on their team. She began at Frankel Dentistry as a dental hygienist, obtained a bachelors’ degree in marketing and became an expanded function dental auxiliary! “I love the immediate gratification of making my patients smile,” shares Brittney.

    Brittney Gates, RDH, EFDA, BS

Mendi was a machinist. She needed three crowns. During her visits with the dental team, she realized dentistry was her calling. She sold her house. Moved to a city with a dental school. In Indianapolis at Indiana University Dental School, she realized her life purpose.  Mendi loves what she does as an expanded function dental auxiliary. Her passion for dentistry is contagious!
