Life was a lot simpler when what we honored was father and mother rather than all major credit cards. Robert Orben
Dr. Sheldon Frankel often jokes, “Only floss the teeth you wanted to keep.” An indication of how deeply he cares for our patients is evident when our patients of 60 years up come in for their regular preventative visits. Dr. Frankel is 92 years young and his son Jon Frankel and daughter Karen Kearns continue the family tradition of caring for patients. They offer three ways your dentist care for fathers.
• Complete needed dental care and continue with preventative visits. Heart Disease is the number one reason for death in men in the United States. Dental Visits promote heart health.
• Schedule regular preventative visits. Nearly 42,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year. Survival rates depend on early detection.
• Whiten Dad’s Teeth. A healthy mouth promotes a healthy body. Once Dad’s smile is healthy. Let us whiten his teeth. We have found patients who whiten their teeth, care for their teeth. It’s all about a healthy smile.
• Show the way!
Baby teeth are essential guideposts for permanent teeth. Misaligned permanent teeth can be caused by losing a primary or baby tooth too early. Holding the space with a fixed appliance can help. Retaining the baby tooth as the permanent tooth develops underneath allows the primary tooth root to melt away and is ideal.
• Not So White!
Baby Teeth are composed differently than the permanent adult teeth. They appear whiter and brighter. Permanent Teeth erupt with thicker levels of underlying dentin. They are naturally a tad darker. If your child notices assure her/him it is of no concern.
• All Grown Up!
Losing a baby tooth can be a big deal. Each child has a unique response. Some will hold on to that barely attached tooth for as long as they possibly can. Others will wiggle and tug at the remaining shell of a tooth until it is successfully set free. For all it is an opportunity for autonomy and a reminder of home care for the newly erupted Adult Teeth. It is a new and serious responsibility. A life long beautiful and healthy smile requires regular visits to the dentist and daily home care.

Every parent’s challenge is getting children to brush their teeth and brush their teeth properly. Brushing for at least two minutes, minimally twice a day, is recommended but not enough to seal the deal.
Toledo dentist, Jon Frankel explains to his parents the shape and form of the teeth can make it difficult especially the back teeth or molars. Deep grooves and crevices on the biting surface of teeth can be virtually impossible to clean.
Dental sealants smooth the grooved surface making brushing more effective. After a quick cleaning and preparation a plastic resin in liquid form flows into the irregular surface and hardens leaving a smooth surface. By the way, Dr. Frankel reminds us sealants aren’t just for kids. Adults can benefit from the quick and easy treatment.
Mouth guards are not just for football, hockey and boxing anymore. Coaches are demanding mouth guards be worn for volleyball, soccer, baseball, basketball, roller derby, gymnastics, lacrosse, weightlifting and wrestling. They have good reasons.
– One third of all dental injuries are sports related according to the American Dental Association
-Tooth loss, tooth and bone (jaw) fracture are common occurrences for athletes not wearing Sports Mouth Guards.
-Soft tissue injuries from the teeth often occur when not wearing Guards.
-Concussion causing forces may be more evenly dispersed or buffered by Guards.
