Each year the national magazine, The Root, recognizes young African American men and women who are forging a path for future greatness. These young people are recommended by teachers, mentors, advisers, employers, and associates. They are all between the ages of 16 and 22 and have been distinguished in areas of social activism and justice, enterprise and corporate innovation, science and technology, green innovation, and arts and culture.
This year, Frankel Patient, Jelani (James) Young, has been recognized as a Young Futurist.
James was born with the urge to change lives one smile at a time. He was nominated by a family friend because of his community service efforts and strong academic success. Since a young age, James has been a member of Toledo Excel, which is a group of students that focuses on civil rights, human rights, and leadership. When James was 9, this group traveled to South Africa. Here James helped a struggling adoption agency and his eyes were opened. He discovered that people from other countries could live so comfortably and happily but with so much less than what Americans possess. This trip inspired him to continue to give back to the Toledo community. Today, you can find the 16-year-old volunteering at local food banks and clothes give-a-ways, helping the needy and homeless.
James also has time to be a normal teenager. He attends St. John’s High School where he is a member of the track team. He is very dedicated to his track career and trains with another Frankel Patient and UT Hall of Famer, Dorian Hooker at ProDay Training Center. (You can read about Dorian Hooker by clicking here- http://toledodentistnews.com/patient-profile/jon-frankel-dentistry-patient-and-university-of-toledo-hall-of-famer-dorian-hooker-knows-speed/ ) He is also inspired by Jesse Owens, the Ohio State and Olympic track star that overcame racial objection and achieved international fame.
In the future James looks to continue his social activism efforts. He is currently examining possible colleges with Michigan State University and the University of Kentucky topping the list. He hopes to study sports management or psychology, but has aspirations to continue volunteering in the community and may begin counseling.
James is truly honored to be recognized as a Young Futurist, and believes that it has rejuvenated his desires to reach his dreams. “This is the biggest thing that has ever happened to me,” he said.
Once recognized in the online publication, the real contest begins. The Young Futurist with the most social media following receives a $500 scholarship. Therefore, to help James win, you must do your part by clicking on the link and encouraging your friends and family to also click by sharing it on your page. There are less than two weeks left. James is currently in fourth place! Let’s help him win!

It was uncontested, Staff Member of the Day, Jon Frankel
This winter, Toledo, Ohio has endured the 10th snowiest winter ever. Level Three (All roadways closed to non-emergency vehicles) snow emergencies have been common. Schools have been closed weeks at a time.
Last Wednesday was a Level Three snow emergency but dentist, Jon Frankel, could not let his patient down. She was in discomfort and needed treatment. His patient was the priority. He retrieved from her home, brought her to the office and along with his skilled assistants brought her not just a beautiful, healthy smile but peace of mind.
Frankel Dentistry considers each patient family and provides exemplary care in a relaxing
and attentive climate. An atmosphere of fun is awarded through patient and staff appreciation events.
It isn’t surprising that Jon Frankel received Staff Member of the Day. Move over Postal workers this dentist delivers.
After wearing braces for five years, Aly is proud of her smile and ensures its health by visiting Frankel Dentistry twice a year. “I love going to Dr. Frankel’s office, everyone is so friendly. At my last visit, I was in and out in a half hour. It was great!” Aly said.
This local beauty grew up in Sylvania, attended The University of Toledo, and is currently working in the marketing department at Promedica.
Aside from working, Aly enjoys working out at Wildwood Athletic Club, hanging out with her friends, and watching reality TV, especially Fashion Police and The Bachelorette.
Veneers create a naturally balanced smile. Each tooth designed to ideal proportions following your smile line and defining your individual look.
Reason Two.
Veneers offer the opportunity to select a tooth shade that enhances your natural coloring.
Reason Three.
The beauty of an idealized smile created with veneers is all in the design. Attractive, memorable yet completely natural veneers are virtually undetectable. No one will know why, they find your new look unforgettable.
Anyone who has visited our office since the expansion has seen this beautiful photo hanging on the wall. Bailie is currently a student at Miami University of Ohio, where she is studying marketing with hopes of pursuing a career in pharmaceutical and medical sales.
But Bailie has a more interesting story. During her senior year of high school, Bailie traveled to LA to compete in a national dance competition. While there, she noticed that the LA Laker Girls were holding open auditions. Bailie decided that this was her calling and, surprisingly, she made the team. After her high school graduation, Bailie moved to LA and performed at the LA Laker games throughout the 2010-2011 season. While living in LA, Bailie also had the opportunity to dance in a Panic at the Disco music video.
Bailie has been a patient of Frankel Dentistry her entire life. Her father and Dr. Frankel went to high school together. Today, being in school, Bailie is sure to get her dental check-ups in when she is home on break.
It is obvious the staff at Frankel Dentistry love what they do. The smiles, the laughter and the high standard of care reflect on something deeper. A vocation toward patient care and a commitment to spread the word that Healthy Mouths promote Healthy Bodies.
Our question was simple, how did you choose a career in dentistry?
Anna Pink
Accounting
From a young age Anna was intrigued by all things related to medicine. She has an analytical mind and even as a child she was fascinated by the practice of medicine. The complex mix of science, art, psychology and business appealed to her keen mind. Her intellectual wanderings were a mere hint of her future as she pursued a career in Hotel Management and Tourism. After graduation she managed to relocate from an island paradise to Toledo, Ohio. Once again she felt drawn to the business of health and healing. She found her niche in Dentistry and couldn’t be happier.
Shawna Jenkins
Expanded Function Dental Assistant
Quick best describes Shawna. Her movement, her mind and her ability to adapt even as a child were impressive. By the way, when Shawna makes up her mind to do something, just check it off the list. While studying Finance (and doing quite well by the way) this creative power force glanced at an ad from a Dental Assisting School. You may have guessed, one glance and she is not just a Dental Assistant but an Expanded Function Dental Assistant who adores her patients and her career.
Kenyetta Lee
Hygiene Assistant/Dental Assistant
Going to the dentist as a child Kenyetta had endless questions. She found the Dental Assistants and Dental Hygienists welcoming as they engaged her by answering her non-stop inquiries. They kept her up to date with dental education and satisfied her need to know all about dentistry and her health. This kindness made Kenyetta look forward to dental visits. As a young person it occurred to her, “Why not do what I love”? As she assessed her abilities, it was obvious her people skills and innate curiosity were a perfect fit for a career in Dental Assisting. Her judgment was right on. It is twenty years later and she still loves what she does!
Marie Sukalo
Marie started her career path in banking. Her education shows a strong accounting background specializing in savings and loan. Her career took a switch to dentistry when she was in her mid-twenties. She started out in her home town but marriage brought her to Toledo, Ohio. Her interview with Sheldon Frankel was nearly two decades ago. Youngtown’s loss was our gain and she has been managing Jon Frankel Dentistry in a variety capacities ever since. Maries says she applied for a job and was hired. It seems dentistry found her.
Melissa Neiderhouse, D.A., E.F.D.A., B.S.
Mel has a genetic predisposition for Dentistry. Two of her uncles are dentists and both suggested she become a Dental Assistant. After one year of college she began training as a Dental Assistant. She didn’t stop there. She continued on to become an E.F.D.A. and recently completed her Bachelor of Science degree. After 15 years she continues to enjoy all aspects of dentistry but finds smile transformations particularly gratifying. By the way Mel knows really knows smiles. After hours she is a Cheerleading Coach.
Debbie Oliver, R.D.H., Hygiene Manager
As a young mother Deb was concerned about her daughter, Danielle. Danielle had a dental disorder known as Amelogenesis Imperfecta. The enamel on her permanent teeth did not form properly. As Deb did research on her daughter’s condition she found she was interested in a Dental Career. She checked out the Dental Hygiene Program at Owens Community College and knew right away it would be an ideal career for her skill set. She thanks her daughter Danny and Jon Frankel (the only dentist she has or would ever work with) for the ideal career path.
In recent previous blogs, we have discussed how our people and our culture have helped us be recognized as “The Best of Toledo” by the Toledo City Paper. To continue this theme, this week we would like to discuss our impact, which is probably the most important reason we have been rewarded with the “Best of Toledo” honor for the past three years.
In American culture, a person’s smile is important. In fact, 92% of Americans believe that having an attractive smile is an important social asset. It is our goal, however, to make sure that even the most attractive smiles are healthy and beautiful. Current research suggests that dangerous bacteria that causes gum disease can enter your blood stream and travel to other organs and begin new infections which may lead to such problems as heart disease and stroke. Knowing this, we have made it our goal to educate our patients that a healthy mouth promotes a healthy body.
Through general, cosmetic, and restorative procedures, Dr. Frankel has been able to help thousands of local Toledo people enhance the health and beauty of their smiles. Additionally, the website features a video library which has become an important tool in patient education. By simply clicking on a short video, a current or future patient can learn from Dr. Frankel what services or procedures provided at the office. If you haven’t checked our our video library, click here: http://www.jonfrankeldentistry.com/video-library.php
Our impact has affected many people in Northwest Ohio… but why hear it from us when you can hear it from the people who have experienced it!
Our people, our culture, and our impact are three pillars that we hold to be true at Jon Frankel Dentistry. Help us continue to be recognized as the “Best of Toledo” by voting! Voting is simple! Just click here and cast your vote! Every vote counts, so please spread the word to your family and friends. Thank you Toledo!
