  4. At Jon Frankel Dentistry we love what we do. More importantly, we enjoy helping make our patients have beautiful smiles that they are proud of. However, some of our patients have said that now they have a beautiful smile, they have to literally teach themselves to smile all over again. Below are the Top 5 Tips from Dr. Frankel and his staff to make your smile beautiful in photos!

1.) Get It Healthy! A beautiful smile is a healthy smile. Correcting cracked, broken, or missing teeth will improve your smile, increase your confidence, and shine in any picture.

2.) Avoid the Double Chin! One of the main concerns when taking a photo is “the double chin.” Double chins come from posture. Slouching or bending your head forward influences the angle of your smile, giving you the appearance of a double chin. To hide it, slightly turn your head or drop your chin so your face isn’t square with the camera.

3.) Work It! A photogenic smile is a confident smile. Surprising to popular belief, many of Hollywood’s finest don’t have perfect teeth. Take Tom Cruise for example. Next time you see a picture of him it is quite obvious that the line between his two front teeth, which should line up with the center of his nose, is off to one side.

4.) Lipstick Can Be Your Friend! The right shade of lipstick makes your teeth look whiter. Blue-based and pink-based undertones will minimize any yellowish tones on your teeth. However, shades that are too dark or too red for your skin tone can detract from your smile.

5.) Practice Makes Perfect! IF you have a big event coming up and want to showcase your smile, practice it! Look at it in the mirror and see how it looks and feels when you hold your shoulders back proudly and strike a natural, unforced smile and hold it for a long time. When you smile gently, your face looks relaxed. Your mouth should be opened slightly and your lower lip will match the curve of your upper teeth.

Often the best smiles have the edges of your upper front teeth gently touch your lower lip. Your cheeks may rise a little bit, but not too much. It’s the opposite of a quick, “excited” smile that makes your eyes squint and your neck muscles tense, which looks awkward in photos.

Now that summer has come to an end, we would love to see some of your best smiling photos! Feel free to tag us in your photos on our Facebook page http://facebook.com/jonfrankeldentistry or on Twitter @jonfrankelDDS #SummerSmile

  8. Don't Delay

-Answers to the Top Three Questions
our Dental Hygiene Team is Asked-
    Part One
    Jon Frankel Dentistry, Toledo, Ohio

Why can’t I just get my teeth cleaned?
A dental cleaning or prophylaxis is more than it appears.

    It feels great.
    It looks great.

“Why can’t I just get my teeth cleaned?”

A regularly scheduled (every 3, 4 or 6 months) teeth cleaning is referenced by previous visits. Areas of concern have been duly noted and are being carefully monitored. The supporting bone and tissue referred to as periodontal tissue has already been evaluated. Visual examinations, X-rays and calibrated measurements called perio-charting have all been recorded. Areas of wear and older restorations are meticulously charted. Oral cancer screenings are performed each visit. At continued care visits, we know you, your medical history and what you need. Changes will be readily noticed and addressed.

If it is your first visit or if it has been several years since you have had your teeth cleaned. Updating the information is vital. Generally your first visit will be dedicated to a comprehensive evaluation of your dental and oral health. At that time it will be determined if you are a candidate for a dental cleaning or if you need scaling and root planning.

A dental cleaning is a thorough removal of stain, mineral deposits and bacterial plaque of the exposed tooth surface. If it has been several years since the last cleaning often mineral deposits or calculus have formed under the gums. This is a source of infection and inflammation. Scaling will remove the deposits. Root planning will smooth the surface of the tooth under the gums. Generally it requires two appointments. One half of the mouth each visit. Six to eight weeks after the scaling and root planning is completed all the areas will be re-evaluated and a teeth cleaning or prophylaxis will be performed. The first year after a scaling and root planning visits are every three months. After a year the frequency of your teeth cleanings will be determined.

There are risks to avoiding dental cleanings and scaling and root planning. The most obvious is loss of teeth due to gum disease. The gums pull away from the teeth and the supporting bone melts away. Healthy gums never bleed. Unhealthy gums may or may not bleed. Gum disease is often silent without any discomfort.

A healthy mouth promotes a healthy body. Heart Attack, Stroke, Diabetes, Low Birth Weight in Babies, Miscarriage, Pancreatic Cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease have been correlated to dental and oral health. Often Cardiologists will refer patients for Scaling and Root Planning before Cardiac Procedures. Gum disease stresses overall health and can hamper recovery.

Regular visits and thorough dental cleaning every 3, 4 or 6 months prevent small issues from becoming big problems. At Jon Frankel Dentistry we love what we do like caring for our dental family with regularly scheduled dental cleanings and exams. You will not only look great and feel great. You will be a proactive partner if your dental and overall health.

  10.

Every parent’s challenge is getting children to brush their teeth and brush their teeth properly. Brushing for at least two minutes, minimally twice a day, is recommended but not enough to seal the deal.

Toledo dentist, Jon Frankel explains to his parents the shape and form of the teeth can make it difficult especially the back teeth or molars. Deep grooves and crevices on the biting surface of teeth can be virtually impossible to clean.

Dental sealants smooth the grooved surface making brushing more effective. After a quick cleaning and preparation a plastic resin in liquid form flows into the irregular surface and hardens leaving a smooth surface. By the way, Dr. Frankel reminds us sealants aren’t just for kids. Adults can benefit from the quick and easy treatment.
