It was uncontested, Staff Member of the Day, Jon Frankel

This winter, Toledo, Ohio has endured the 10th snowiest winter ever. Level Three (All roadways closed to non-emergency vehicles) snow emergencies have been common. Schools have been closed weeks at a time.

Last Wednesday was a Level Three snow emergency but dentist, Jon Frankel, could not let his patient down. She was in discomfort and needed treatment. His patient was the priority. He retrieved from her home, brought her to the office and along with his skilled assistants brought her not just a beautiful, healthy smile but peace of mind.

Frankel Dentistry considers each patient family and provides exemplary care in a relaxing
and attentive climate. An atmosphere of fun is awarded through patient and staff appreciation events.

It isn’t surprising that Jon Frankel received Staff Member of the Day. Move over Postal workers this dentist delivers.

  3. Aly1

After wearing braces for five years, Aly is proud of her smile and ensures its health by visiting Frankel Dentistry twice a year. “I love going to Dr. Frankel’s office, everyone is so friendly. At my last visit, I was in and out in a half hour. It was great!” Aly said.

This local beauty grew up in Sylvania, attended The University of Toledo, and is currently working in the marketing department at Promedica.

Aside from working, Aly enjoys working out at Wildwood Athletic Club, hanging out with her friends, and watching reality TV, especially Fashion Police and The Bachelorette.

  4. Smiles

    Smiles

It is obvious the staff at Frankel Dentistry love what they do. The smiles, the laughter and the high standard of care reflect on something deeper. A vocation toward patient care and a commitment to spread the word that Healthy Mouths promote Healthy Bodies.

Our question was simple, how did you choose a career in dentistry?

    Anna Pink
    Accounting

From a young age Anna was intrigued by all things related to medicine. She has an analytical mind and even as a child she was fascinated by the practice of medicine. The complex mix of science, art, psychology and business appealed to her keen mind. Her intellectual wanderings were a mere hint of her future as she pursued a career in Hotel Management and Tourism. After graduation she managed to relocate from an island paradise to Toledo, Ohio. Once again she felt drawn to the business of health and healing. She found her niche in Dentistry and couldn’t be happier.

    Shawna Jenkins
    Expanded Function Dental Assistant

Quick best describes Shawna. Her movement, her mind and her ability to adapt even as a child were impressive. By the way, when Shawna makes up her mind to do something, just check it off the list. While studying Finance (and doing quite well by the way) this creative power force glanced at an ad from a Dental Assisting School. You may have guessed, one glance and she is not just a Dental Assistant but an Expanded Function Dental Assistant who adores her patients and her career.

    Kenyetta Lee
    Hygiene Assistant/Dental Assistant

Going to the dentist as a child Kenyetta had endless questions. She found the Dental Assistants and Dental Hygienists welcoming as they engaged her by answering her non-stop inquiries. They kept her up to date with dental education and satisfied her need to know all about dentistry and her health. This kindness made Kenyetta look forward to dental visits. As a young person it occurred to her, “Why not do what I love”? As she assessed her abilities, it was obvious her people skills and innate curiosity were a perfect fit for a career in Dental Assisting. Her judgment was right on. It is twenty years later and she still loves what she does!

    Marie Sukalo

Marie started her career path in banking. Her education shows a strong accounting background specializing in savings and loan. Her career took a switch to dentistry when she was in her mid-twenties. She started out in her home town but marriage brought her to Toledo, Ohio. Her interview with Sheldon Frankel was nearly two decades ago. Youngtown’s loss was our gain and she has been managing Jon Frankel Dentistry in a variety capacities ever since. Maries says she applied for a job and was hired. It seems dentistry found her.

    Melissa Neiderhouse, D.A., E.F.D.A., B.S.

Mel has a genetic predisposition for Dentistry. Two of her uncles are dentists and both suggested she become a Dental Assistant. After one year of college she began training as a Dental Assistant. She didn’t stop there. She continued on to become an E.F.D.A. and recently completed her Bachelor of Science degree. After 15 years she continues to enjoy all aspects of dentistry but finds smile transformations particularly gratifying. By the way Mel knows really knows smiles. After hours she is a Cheerleading Coach.

    Debbie Oliver, R.D.H., Hygiene Manager

As a young mother Deb was concerned about her daughter, Danielle. Danielle had a dental disorder known as Amelogenesis Imperfecta. The enamel on her permanent teeth did not form properly. As Deb did research on her daughter’s condition she found she was interested in a Dental Career. She checked out the Dental Hygiene Program at Owens Community College and knew right away it would be an ideal career for her skill set. She thanks her daughter Danny and Jon Frankel (the only dentist she has or would ever work with) for the ideal career path.

  6. Don't Delay

In recent previous blogs, we have discussed how our people and our culture have helped us be recognized as “The Best of Toledo” by the Toledo City Paper. To continue this theme, this week we would like to discuss our impact, which is probably the most important reason we have been rewarded with the “Best of Toledo” honor for the past three years.

In American culture, a person’s smile is important. In fact, 92% of Americans believe that having an attractive smile is an important social asset. It is our goal, however, to make sure that even the most attractive smiles are healthy and beautiful. Current research suggests that dangerous bacteria that causes gum disease can enter your blood stream and travel to other organs and begin new infections which may lead to such problems as heart disease and stroke. Knowing this, we have made it our goal to educate our patients that a healthy mouth promotes a healthy body.

Through general, cosmetic, and restorative procedures, Dr. Frankel has been able to help thousands of local Toledo people enhance the health and beauty of their smiles. Additionally, the website features a video library which has become an important tool in patient education. By simply clicking on a short video, a current or future patient can learn from Dr. Frankel what services or procedures provided at the office. If you haven’t checked our our video library, click here: http://www.jonfrankeldentistry.com/video-library.php

  7. Wednesday, November 27, marked the third annual Free Dentistry Day, where Dr. Frankel and his staff open the doors to help people in need get out of dental pain for the holidays. This year, was quite the success.

    2:30 a.m.
It is dark. It is cold. There are snow flurries in the air. At this time, the first patients start to form a line, waiting for Free Dentistry Day to begin.

    6:45 a.m.
While many people may just be rolling out of their warm beds, Jon Frankel Dentistry employees arrive to start their busy day. It may be early, but everyone was in good spirits, knowing that they are making a difference this holiday season. By this time, the line in front of the office has grown to over 30 people, who are all cold but patiently waiting for the doors to open.

    7:00 a.m.
The charts are in place, ready to soon be filled out by patients. Empty chairs that will soon be filled with patients line the hallways. The smell of fresh brewed coffee and doughnuts that was donated by Tim Horton’s fills the office.

Dr. Frankel takes a moment to thank all the employees who have volunteered their time to help this holiday season. “It is a great service that we are doing today,” he said. “I really appreciate all of you who came out to help.”

The list of employees who volunteered their time is endless. It included five dentists, several EFDAS and hygienists, and many office workers. Each worker knew their specific role in order to make this day a success.

    7:15 a.m.

The doors open. One by one, patients of young and old enter the main door. They each grab a chart and a pen and begin filling out the paperwork. Immediately, they are seated in numerical order, ensuring that the people who were in line early in the morning were going to get treated first… And their wait began.

Soon, the first patients of the day completed their treatment. Each one of them showing extreme gratitude as they walked out of the doors. “I don’t have insurance, and I can’t afford help. Thank You for helping me,” one gentleman said upon leaving.

“Two thumbs up and 5 stars,” another lady said once she was out of pain. “I have had tooth pain for so long. I am so grateful you guys were able to help me,” she continued.

    11:40 a.m.
Dr. Frankel declares that we have reached max capacity for the day with a total of over 70 people served.

The last patient finished their treatment just after 1:15 that afternoon. When all was said and done, procedures such as root canals, tooth extractions, small cosmetic procedures, and fillings were all performed in order to relieve pain this holiday season. These services totaled over $31,500.

This type of service could not have been obtained without the extra hard work of the clinical staff, working tirelessly Wednesday morning. But, it is always a great feeling knowing that each one of them were able to give back to the community they love!

  8. It’s that time of the year again; time to vote for the Toledo City Paper’s “Best of Toledo.” Last week we discussed how our people have helped make us the “best” for three consecutive years. This week, we would like to share with you a different aspect of our office that has helped us out shine all other dental practices in the Toledo area. This piece of our puzzle is our culture.

    BestPatients

Below are five facts that have defined Frankel Culture!

    1.) We are Toledo!
For over 70 years, Frankel Dentistry has been a pillar of oral health in Toledo, Ohio. Dr. Frankel’s father, Sheldon, started the private practice in 1944. Since the beginning, Frankel Dentistry has set the standard of state-of-the-art technology. In fact, Dr. Sheldon Frankel was the first dentist in the Toledo area to use an electric hand piece. Today, Dr. Frankel continues to utilize technology with his use of digital x-rays, CEREC same day crowns, and much more.

But, in order to provide the best service to the area, you have to truly love the area. Dr. Frankel was raised in Toledo. After completion of dental school at Ohio State University, he didn’t move to a new area to start his own business. He came home, to where his heart is, to TOLEDO. Here, he raised his family and continued to help his community by promoting good oral health.

Dr. Frankel’s staff is also proud of Toledo. Aside from Dr. Frankel, the remainder of his staff also has roots in Northwest Ohio. These are people who care about the people in their area and have made Toledo home.

    Original Office DownTown
Dr. Sheldon’s first office was in this building downtown across from the library!

    2.) We are Family!
Obviously, when you have a practice that is passed down from father to son, strong family values are at its core. But our family extends past our employees and to our patients. In fact, we don’t consider our patients, “patients.” They are our dental family members.

Like a family, each member, has an important role to play in order to make the family work. Additionally, like many families, our practice is built on trust and support of each other. We understand that some people may be nervous or anxious to visit the dentist. But it is our goal to make our members feel comfortable and relaxed as possible. This specialized focus is one of the reasons of our success, and one of the many ways we are able to change lives a smile at a time.

    3.) We are the Standard!
When Jon Frankel continued his father’s practice, he set a goal to become the standard of dental care that others want to achieve. This mission is never stagnant; we must always strive for continual improvement within our business model in order to give the highest standard of care available in the Toledo area. Therefore, we must be committed to excellence. From the moment you enter the building to the moment you exit, it is our duty to ensure you have the most caring, minimally invasive, aesthetic, cost effective treatment available.

Former University of Toledo football coach, who is currently coaching at the University of Alabama, Nick Saban said it best, “mediocre people don’t like high achievers, and high achievers don’t like mediocre people.” Dr. Frankel has created a team of high achievers who are willing to raise the bar, ensuring that the care given by the staff is of the highest quality.

    4.) We are Authentic!
This piece of the Jon Frankel culture may be the largest. Our image is real. What you see at Jon Frankel Dentistry is what you get. Every member of the staff is dedicated to making sure your experience is personalized and friendly. We do not judge you on your current dental health; instead it is our goal to help you get your mouth beautiful and healthy.

But our authenticity is deeper than our staff. From our billboards to our Facebook page, our public image is true to who we are. In fact, our billboard models as well as photos on our office walls are actual Jon Frankel patient. Those smiles are Jon Frankel smiles. We are proud of our patients and are thankful that they are willing to let us show it.

    5.) We are Giving Back!
Because we love Toledo, we love to give back to the people of Toledo. From our Free Dentistry Day every November, to our Halloween Candy Buyback, to sponsorships of local charities like Feed Lucas County Children and Race for Recovery, we are dedicated to helping the people of Northwest Ohio.

  10. Parents Beware! Halloween can be a time of added stress for both you and your children’s teeth. However, with a few helpful tips, the tricks of damaging treats may be prevented.

    halloween

As dental professionals, we do stress the importance to proper dental hygiene and care. However, Halloween is a time when kids should be kids. They should have the opportunity to go trick-or-treating and enjoy the candy they collected. But, as with many things in life, there should be limits.

Below we are giving you six tips to help keep your teeth healthy this Halloween!

1.) Indulge in Treats During Meal Time
Having kids eat treats around meal time has two main benefits. First, by limiting treats to dinner or other times when meals are scheduled, you are making sure your children are eating healthy, nutritious food and not filling up on candy. Secondly, while eating your mouth produces more saliva which helps cancel out harmful bacteria in your mouth and wash food particles away.

    2.) Avoid Hard Candy
Hard candies like Jolly Ranchers and Jawbreakers stay in your mouth for an extended period of time, coating your teeth in sugar, which will eventually lead to decay. Instead, it is recommended to eat candies like chocolate which melts quickly and are better for your teeth.

    3.) Avoid Sticky Candy
Sticky candies like caramel, taffy, and gummy bears also bath your teeth in sugar and wedge in between the teeth which may cause cavities. Additionally, the stickiness of these candies may be damaging to fillings, causing them to become loose or fall out.

    4.) Drink More Water
Drinking water can help rinse the sugar off of your teeth and protect them from decay. Each time you indulge in candy, be sure to rinse!

    5.) Donate Excess Candy
While kids love to gather as much candy as possible, eating it all becomes a challenge. Select a limited amount of your favorite candies (preferably chocolate) and donate the excess. At Jon Frankel Dentistry we are buying back excess Halloween candy for a $1 per pound on Friday, November 1st from 7:30-2 and Monday, November 4th from 7:30-5. We will be donating the collected candy and toothbrushes to local Toledo troops who are currently serving our country overseas. Last year we got over 500 pounds of candy off the streets!

Jason and Brooke Johnson halloween Candy pick up

6.) Brush, Floss, and Visit Dr. Frankel
Don’t forget that it is important to brush twice a day for two minutes and floss daily. After eating candy, it is also a good idea to brush! Now is also a good time to remind your children the importance of good oral hygiene all while keeping it fun. Perhaps treat kids to a new toothbrush or have them try out the cool disclosing tablets that turn any areas where kids may have missed brushing red. Finally, visit Dr. Frankel. At Jon Frankel Dentistry we love kids and they love us! They get to watch cartoons while getting their teeth cleaning and get to pick a toy from our treasure chest!

Like so many times in life, learning can be fun! Don’t take the fun out of Halloween this year, but look for good ways to help teach your kids how excess can lead to many problems!
