Don’t Forget to Use your Dental Insurance

It may only be August, but the holiday season and the end of the year will be here before you know it! Most patients pay a monthly premium for dental benefits and if you have not seen a dentist this year and had routine cleanings, your benefits are going to waste. Did you know your benefit plan may have a deductible and yearly maximum. Most plans renew on January 1st every year and benefits do not roll over.
We love insurance companies and we want you to get the most from your dental benefits. If you need assistance on understanding how your insurance works, please call our office to set up a benefits check appointment. Our team is happy to help you understand how your policy works – we want you to get the best value for what you’re paying for!

Had extreme pain from upper wisdom teeth, called the Toledo office, they got me in within a hour with no appointment, advanced notice, or emergency fee. Was a new patient, was seen by the staff within 30 mins of filling out my paperwork and they did the work I needed on the spot. Excellent communication and attention from the doctors and assistants. Absolutely no complaints. Would recommend to anyone needed a quick operation done, or for a comfortable routine experience.

The staff at this office is amazing! I never have to wait long, they are very clear and efficient and respect you. Other offices I have not had this experience and they talk down to you. At this location, the dental hygienists are SO NICE! The girl I had was so sweet, friendly, and enthusiastic. Her knowledge really showed. She gave very good advice for keeping healthy teeth. She went above and beyond to make sure I got whitening trays and was very quick but thorough with her cleaning and getting the doctor to see me. Thank you so much for always making this an enjoyable experience and for being so nice!! 🙂

I am grateful to the office for their understanding of my anxiety and that they help me through the visit. I have never actually looked forward (dreaded it actually) to going to the dentist, but now, it’s not so bad. Thank you!

    Lisa

We have seen an increase in dental decay in children and adults. Avoid pop, coffee creamer and juice. Your teeth will thank you.

    Deb

Floss no matter what the news reports tell you. Flossing works!

    Mel

Ladies, to add drama to your whitened teeth wear red/blue lipstick.  Your teeth will look even brighter.

    Heather

If you have sensitive teeth MI paste really works even when whitening!

    Danni

Always, always, always wear your retainers after braces. If you lose your retainers replace them as soon as possible. Teeth move back to where they were before ortho if you don’t wear your retainers.

    Melanie

Electric toothbrushes do work. I think Philips Sonicare is best.

    Annie

If you want whiter teeth, even dark tetracycline stained teeth can be whitened with the KOR Whitening System.

    Brittany

Learn how to floss properly. Many people really don’t know how to floss.

    Pamela

Give your children an enjoyable dental experience. Read books about dental visits, brush teeth together and mention how much you like going to the dentist. A healthy mouth promotes a healthy body. What better gift could you offer to your children?

Toledo Dentist offers three easy ways to take care of small issues before they become big problems.

    front of building

    1. Visit your dentist at least twice a year.

Preventative care is the cornerstone in building a healthy mouth. If it has been awhile since you have been to the dentist, schedule an appointment. Work out a treatment plan with your dental professionals. Once dental health has been restored, visit twice a year. Keep your smile healthy!

    2. Use your insurance benefits.

Don’t let time pass when it comes to dental health. Schedule your dental appointments early in the year. Often dental office schedules are filled toward the end of the year.

    3. Floss and brush.

What you do at home is as important as the best professional dental care.

  1. When was the last time you flossed?

You may think you have a good oral routine by brushing twice a day, but flossing is as equally important. Brushing cleans the surface of your teeth, but flossing helps to clean food particles in between your teeth. Bacteria can hide in the gaps between your teeth which can lead to cavities, plaque and gum disease.

Make flossing a part of your bedtime routine when you have more time in the day — take the time to floss slowly and carefully. If you have children, make it a family event so children start healthy habits early.

This video shows an interesting technique for flossing children’s teeth.

There are different types of floss available such as wax floss and floss picks – try different types to see which work the best for your mouth.

To make sure you’re flossing correctly, ask your dental team at your next appointment if your technique is correct.

  1. Loose Tooth?

    Pamela and Alexa 2009

Does your child have a tooth hanging by a thread? Should you tie the tooth to a piece of string and shut the door? When children lose their teeth , it can be an exciting or scary time.

    Jon Frankel, DDS

    Jon Frankel, DDS

Dr. Frankel has some tips on the best way to pull that loose tooth:

    1. Have the child wiggle the tooth back and forth with their tongue.
    2. Try to eat crunchy foods such as apples, carrots and pears.
    3. Brush your teeth to help move the tooth back and forth.

Don’t force a tooth to come out that’s not ready as it can cause infection. Be patient if the tooth or your child is not ready.

When the tooth does fall out, gargle with water and don’t be alarmed if there is some blood. Don’t forget to leave a note or prize from the tooth fairy to keep this experience fun and exciting!

  1. Thirsty? Quench Your Thirst with Water

Stay Cool and Hydrate with Water

    Stay Cool, Hydrate with Water

With temperatures on the rise, the heat can leave you quite thirsty! Recent studies have found that children, specifically 12 – 14 year olds,  are consuming sports drinks unnecessarily. These sports drinks are high in sugar and can lead to obesity and tooth erosion and cavities.

    Drink Water

Children misunderstand the use of the sports drink and consume them socially instead they are intended for endurance training and intense sporting events. Athletes who consume them should be aware of the effects the drinks may have on your teeth and should practice good dental habits.

Energy drinks also contain a lot of sugar and caffeine and are being consumed by middle-and-high school students too frequently.
Help educate children and teach children to opt for water or milk to keep them hydrated.

We all know that you can build stronger muscles by exercising and lifting weights, but did you know you can also build stronger teeth?

Here are three ways to strengthen your teeth at home:

Calcium will help protect your mouth against gum disease.Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium and can also help to decrease inflammation of gums which is associated with gum disease.

  1. Broken or Chipped Tooth?  Keep Calm and Call Your Dentist

    Dental Anxiety

Not only is a broken or chipped tooth painful, it may be worrisome and embarrassing. Your teeth can break or chip from a hard fall, biting on a food that is too hard and from a cavity that weakened your tooth. It is important to protect your teeth and mouth from any physical contact as well as keeping them strong and healthy with good oral hygiene.
If you break or chip your tooth, you will want to: rinse your mouth with warm water and clean up any bleeding in your mouth with gauze (if applicable).
Our office is here for you — if you break a tooth after our office is closed, Dr. Frankel is still here for you! You can contact him on his cell phone in the event of an emergency.
Your dentist will be able to repair your tooth. Depending on how much has chipped off, the dentist may repair the tooth with a filing or may use bonding if a front tooth is chipped.
