Jon Frankel Dentistry

  1. Wednesday, November 27, marked the third annual Free Dentistry Day, where Dr. Frankel and his staff open the doors to help people in need get out of dental pain for the holidays. This year, was quite the success.

    2:30 a.m.
It is dark. It is cold. There are snow flurries in the air. At this time, the first patients start to form a line, waiting for Free Dentistry Day to begin.

    6:45 a.m.
While many people may just be rolling out of their warm beds, Jon Frankel Dentistry employees arrive to start their busy day. It may be early, but everyone was in good spirits, knowing that they are making a difference this holiday season. By this time, the line in front of the office has grown to over 30 people, who are all cold but patiently waiting for the doors to open.

    7:00 a.m.
The charts are in place, ready to soon be filled out by patients. Empty chairs that will soon be filled with patients line the hallways. The smell of fresh brewed coffee and doughnuts that was donated by Tim Horton’s fills the office.

Dr. Frankel takes a moment to thank all the employees who have volunteered their time to help this holiday season. “It is a great service that we are doing today,” he said. “I really appreciate all of you who came out to help.”

The list of employees who volunteered their time is endless. It included five dentists, several EFDAS and hygienists, and many office workers. Each worker knew their specific role in order to make this day a success.

    7:15 a.m.

The doors open. One by one, patients of young and old enter the main door. They each grab a chart and a pen and begin filling out the paperwork. Immediately, they are seated in numerical order, ensuring that the people who were in line early in the morning were going to get treated first… And their wait began.

Soon, the first patients of the day completed their treatment. Each one of them showing extreme gratitude as they walked out of the doors. “I don’t have insurance, and I can’t afford help. Thank You for helping me,” one gentleman said upon leaving.

“Two thumbs up and 5 stars,” another lady said once she was out of pain. “I have had tooth pain for so long. I am so grateful you guys were able to help me,” she continued.

    11:40 a.m.
Dr. Frankel declares that we have reached max capacity for the day with a total of over 70 people served.

The last patient finished their treatment just after 1:15 that afternoon. When all was said and done, procedures such as root canals, tooth extractions, small cosmetic procedures, and fillings were all performed in order to relieve pain this holiday season. These services totaled over $31,500.

This type of service could not have been obtained without the extra hard work of the clinical staff, working tirelessly Wednesday morning. But, it is always a great feeling knowing that each one of them were able to give back to the community they love!

  1. It’s that time of the year again; time to vote for the Toledo City Paper’s “Best of Toledo.” Last week we discussed how our people have helped make us the “best” for three consecutive years. This week, we would like to share with you a different aspect of our office that has helped us out shine all other dental practices in the Toledo area. This piece of our puzzle is our culture.

    BestPatients

Below are five facts that have defined Frankel Culture!

    1.) We are Toledo!
For over 70 years, Frankel Dentistry has been a pillar of oral health in Toledo, Ohio. Dr. Frankel’s father, Sheldon, started the private practice in 1944. Since the beginning, Frankel Dentistry has set the standard of state-of-the-art technology. In fact, Dr. Sheldon Frankel was the first dentist in the Toledo area to use an electric hand piece. Today, Dr. Frankel continues to utilize technology with his use of digital x-rays, CEREC same day crowns, and much more.

But, in order to provide the best service to the area, you have to truly love the area. Dr. Frankel was raised in Toledo. After completion of dental school at Ohio State University, he didn’t move to a new area to start his own business. He came home, to where his heart is, to TOLEDO. Here, he raised his family and continued to help his community by promoting good oral health.

Dr. Frankel’s staff is also proud of Toledo. Aside from Dr. Frankel, the remainder of his staff also has roots in Northwest Ohio. These are people who care about the people in their area and have made Toledo home.

    Original Office DownTown
Dr. Sheldon’s first office was in this building downtown across from the library!

    2.) We are Family!
Obviously, when you have a practice that is passed down from father to son, strong family values are at its core. But our family extends past our employees and to our patients. In fact, we don’t consider our patients, “patients.” They are our dental family members.

Like a family, each member, has an important role to play in order to make the family work. Additionally, like many families, our practice is built on trust and support of each other. We understand that some people may be nervous or anxious to visit the dentist. But it is our goal to make our members feel comfortable and relaxed as possible. This specialized focus is one of the reasons of our success, and one of the many ways we are able to change lives a smile at a time.

    3.) We are the Standard!
When Jon Frankel continued his father’s practice, he set a goal to become the standard of dental care that others want to achieve. This mission is never stagnant; we must always strive for continual improvement within our business model in order to give the highest standard of care available in the Toledo area. Therefore, we must be committed to excellence. From the moment you enter the building to the moment you exit, it is our duty to ensure you have the most caring, minimally invasive, aesthetic, cost effective treatment available.

Former University of Toledo football coach, who is currently coaching at the University of Alabama, Nick Saban said it best, “mediocre people don’t like high achievers, and high achievers don’t like mediocre people.” Dr. Frankel has created a team of high achievers who are willing to raise the bar, ensuring that the care given by the staff is of the highest quality.

    4.) We are Authentic!
This piece of the Jon Frankel culture may be the largest. Our image is real. What you see at Jon Frankel Dentistry is what you get. Every member of the staff is dedicated to making sure your experience is personalized and friendly. We do not judge you on your current dental health; instead it is our goal to help you get your mouth beautiful and healthy.

But our authenticity is deeper than our staff. From our billboards to our Facebook page, our public image is true to who we are. In fact, our billboard models as well as photos on our office walls are actual Jon Frankel patient. Those smiles are Jon Frankel smiles. We are proud of our patients and are thankful that they are willing to let us show it.

    5.) We are Giving Back!
Because we love Toledo, we love to give back to the people of Toledo. From our Free Dentistry Day every November, to our Halloween Candy Buyback, to sponsorships of local charities like Feed Lucas County Children and Race for Recovery, we are dedicated to helping the people of Northwest Ohio.

    Patients:
It would be impossible for us to be the best without the best patients! We couldn’t have done it without you! Thank You! It is through your loyalty and willingness to refer friends and family that have helped us build our great reputation in Northwest Ohio.

Additionally, because of patients like you, we have had the opportunity to expand our office and provide special services like night and weekend hours as well as emergency appointments.

A simple “thank you” does not seem justified for what we have been able to do. We truly love our patients! They really are the best!

  1. Parents Beware! Halloween can be a time of added stress for both you and your children’s teeth. However, with a few helpful tips, the tricks of damaging treats may be prevented.

    halloween

As dental professionals, we do stress the importance to proper dental hygiene and care. However, Halloween is a time when kids should be kids. They should have the opportunity to go trick-or-treating and enjoy the candy they collected. But, as with many things in life, there should be limits.

Below we are giving you six tips to help keep your teeth healthy this Halloween!

1.) Indulge in Treats During Meal Time
Having kids eat treats around meal time has two main benefits. First, by limiting treats to dinner or other times when meals are scheduled, you are making sure your children are eating healthy, nutritious food and not filling up on candy. Secondly, while eating your mouth produces more saliva which helps cancel out harmful bacteria in your mouth and wash food particles away.

    2.) Avoid Hard Candy
Hard candies like Jolly Ranchers and Jawbreakers stay in your mouth for an extended period of time, coating your teeth in sugar, which will eventually lead to decay. Instead, it is recommended to eat candies like chocolate which melts quickly and are better for your teeth.

    3.) Avoid Sticky Candy
Sticky candies like caramel, taffy, and gummy bears also bath your teeth in sugar and wedge in between the teeth which may cause cavities. Additionally, the stickiness of these candies may be damaging to fillings, causing them to become loose or fall out.

    4.) Drink More Water
Drinking water can help rinse the sugar off of your teeth and protect them from decay. Each time you indulge in candy, be sure to rinse!

    5.) Donate Excess Candy
While kids love to gather as much candy as possible, eating it all becomes a challenge. Select a limited amount of your favorite candies (preferably chocolate) and donate the excess. At Jon Frankel Dentistry we are buying back excess Halloween candy for a $1 per pound on Friday, November 1st from 7:30-2 and Monday, November 4th from 7:30-5. We will be donating the collected candy and toothbrushes to local Toledo troops who are currently serving our country overseas. Last year we got over 500 pounds of candy off the streets!

Jason and Brooke Johnson halloween Candy pick up

6.) Brush, Floss, and Visit Dr. Frankel
Don’t forget that it is important to brush twice a day for two minutes and floss daily. After eating candy, it is also a good idea to brush! Now is also a good time to remind your children the importance of good oral hygiene all while keeping it fun. Perhaps treat kids to a new toothbrush or have them try out the cool disclosing tablets that turn any areas where kids may have missed brushing red. Finally, visit Dr. Frankel. At Jon Frankel Dentistry we love kids and they love us! They get to watch cartoons while getting their teeth cleaning and get to pick a toy from our treasure chest!

Like so many times in life, learning can be fun! Don’t take the fun out of Halloween this year, but look for good ways to help teach your kids how excess can lead to many problems!

Connie, our beloved hygienist of the Frankel Dentistry family, welcomed her granddaughter Lily Rose into the world on July 7, 2013. This beautiful baby, however, has had quite the struggle. Born prematurely, Lily’s first day were spent in the neonatal ICU where she unexpectedly contracted Necrotizing Enterocolis (NEC), which is an infection that causes the destruction of the intestines. This is an extremely rare condition that only affects 1 in every 2000-4000 premature infants in the neonatal ICU.

Unfortunately, Lily was not the only infant who contracted this virus while in the hospital. Two other preemie’s were also infected, and lost their battle with the disease. Lily, however, is a fighter. She battled through the infection and was released from the hospital two months after her birth on September 7, 2013.

Young Lily’s battles are not completely over. Due to her premature birth, Lily must wear leg braces for most of the day. Though uncomfortable now, it is expected that Lily Rose will make a full recovery.

We want to take a moment to congratulate Connie on the birth of her granddaughter and offer encouragement to Lily on fighting this battle.

Connie and her family have decided to help Lily and her parents by raising money to help with some of the medical cost by selling cupcakes to their friends, family, co-workers, and churches.

    Don’t they look delicious?

The aroma of the box once opened is mouthwatering. But the best part is once you bite into the cupcakes, a succulent chocolate filling oozes out of the cake.

  1. Since 2004 Suzie Miller and her family have been patients of Jon Frankel Dentistry. However, her beautiful smile has a major sweet tooth that inspired her and a friend to start a company called “Among Friends,” which specializes in hand-crafted baking mixes.

    suzie

Formed in 2006, “Among Friends” is not your average cookie company. These baking mixes are good for you but still have the amazing homemade taste of grandma’s delicacies. The idea began while having a cup of coffee and a cookie with a good friend. During that time, the pair noticed that people are not in the kitchen making nutritious food that is good for them. This problem worried the friends because their kids were growing older. Hence, Among Friends was formed in order to give people healthy baking options that they are proud of because they are pulling them out of their oven.

    _MG_4387

Among Friends Hand-crafted Baking Mixes have a wide range of healthy cookies that are gluten-free and also free of genetically modified organisms. These baking mixes are also extra-special because they are named after people they love, be it a friend or family member. Since starting, the popularity of Among Friends has grown nationally.

We, at Jon Frankel Dentistry, would like to congratulate Suzie on her accomplishment. If you are interested in Among Friends and their products, please visit their website at www.amongfriendsbakingmixes.com And don’t worry, Suzie’s sweet tooth and mouth is healthier than ever before!

  1. Even dedicated vegetarians are voting for the meat. Local Toledo Area Hollywood transplant and Jon Frankel Dentistry patient has apparently found the long lost meat. The lost resource was hidden by Snoop Dog’s baking skill. Baked is nearly synonymous with SD so it comes as no surprise.

The question, “Where’s the meat?” is now obsolete. Enjoy Kate Upton, Snoop Dog and Oliver Cooper. Vote #TEAMMEAT and let Oliver Cooper’s discovery be known.

  1. Dental Smiles

    Dental Smiles

It is really obvious the staff at Jon Frankel Dentistry love what they do. The smiles, the laughter and the high standard of care reflect on something deeper. A vocation toward patient care and a commitment to spread the word that Healthy Mouths promote Healthy Bodies.

Our question was simple, how did you choose a career in dentistry?

Danielle was only 6 years old and she had a problem, eight cavities and no desire to sit in the dental chair for more than a few minutes. Once she settled in, she never left. Fascinated by the art and science and intrigued by the process Danielle was determined to become a Dental Hygienist. Several years later after graduating from our local Owens Community College with a double degree as a Dental Hygienist and an Expanded Function Dental Assistant she joined the team at Jon Frankel Dentistry.

Lindsay knew she wanted a career in the medical field but did not want to wait. Her urgency was our gain. After thoroughly exploring all her options it was clear. Dental Hygiene offered exactly what she wanted and would not require a decade of study before seeing patients. She enjoys enhancing the overall health of patients by offering health education while working in a clinical setting.

Mary Ann completed all her prerequisites for Nursing School and soon she realized it was not her ideal career choice. She wanted a profession that focused on disease prevention. Mid pregnancy with her first child she made a 180 degree turn and within no time she became a Dental Assistant/ Expanded Function Dental Assistant. Teaching patients about restoring their smiles and how to prevent disease are her favorite things to do. She finds dentistry an all-inclusive opportunity. Science, art, psychology and serving the public keep her busy, happy and excited to go to work each day.

  1. SGL_3037R-resized

Cheala’s photos are already a big hit at Jon Frankel Dentistry, and with a smile like her’s, it is easy to see why.

But Cheala is not your average model. This young beauty is a vegetarian and enjoys spending her time camping and hiking outdoors or playing field hockey and lacrosse.

Born in Massachusetts, Cheala moved to Toledo to be with her mother, Mary Ann, who works at our Toledo office. Although she really misses her friends in Massachusetts, Cheala stays busy with school and work. Currently, she attends Mercy College and works in the maternity ward at St. Anne’s Hospital.

However, Cheala also loves her new dental family. “Dr. Shumate took out my wisdom teeth, and turned a frightening experience into one where I was relaxed and comfortable,” she said. More importantly, she really appreciates the fact that Dr. Frankel and his staff are all very organized, friendly, clean and extremely accommodating to patients. “Dr. Shumate even called me the next day to make sure I was alright,” she said. “It is great to have that kind of care!”

  1. At Jon Frankel Dentistry we love what we do. More importantly, we enjoy helping make our patients have beautiful smiles that they are proud of. However, some of our patients have said that now they have a beautiful smile, they have to literally teach themselves to smile all over again. Below are the Top 5 Tips from Dr. Frankel and his staff to make your smile beautiful in photos!

    SGL_2398 - Copy

1.) Get It Healthy! A beautiful smile is a healthy smile. Correcting cracked, broken, or missing teeth will improve your smile, increase your confidence, and shine in any picture.

2.) Avoid the Double Chin! One of the main concerns when taking a photo is “the double chin.” Double chins come from posture. Slouching or bending your head forward influences the angle of your smile, giving you the appearance of a double chin. To hide it, slightly turn your head or drop your chin so your face isn’t square with the camera.

3.) Work It! A photogenic smile is a confident smile. Surprising to popular belief, many of Hollywood’s finest don’t have perfect teeth. Take Tom Cruise for example. Next time you see a picture of him it is quite obvious that the line between his two front teeth, which should line up with the center of his nose, is off to one side.

4.) Lipstick Can Be Your Friend! The right shade of lipstick makes your teeth look whiter. Blue-based and pink-based undertones will minimize any yellowish tones on your teeth. However, shades that are too dark or too red for your skin tone can detract from your smile.

5.) Practice Makes Perfect! IF you have a big event coming up and want to showcase your smile, practice it! Look at it in the mirror and see how it looks and feels when you hold your shoulders back proudly and strike a natural, unforced smile and hold it for a long time. When you smile gently, your face looks relaxed. Your mouth should be opened slightly and your lower lip will match the curve of your upper teeth.

Often the best smiles have the edges of your upper front teeth gently touch your lower lip. Your cheeks may rise a little bit, but not too much. It’s the opposite of a quick, “excited” smile that makes your eyes squint and your neck muscles tense, which looks awkward in photos.

Now that summer has come to an end, we would love to see some of your best smiling photos! Feel free to tag us in your photos on our Facebook page http://facebook.com/jonfrankeldentistry or on Twitter @jonfrankelDDS #SummerSmile
